Bermuda Grass: The Tough, Low-Maintenance Dallas Lawn

Back to Blog

Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) is the default lawn choice for full-sun properties in North Texas, and for good reason. It's the most heat-tolerant, drought-resistant, and traffic-tolerant warm-season grass available. Mowed short, it creates a dense, putty-green carpet that looks professional with minimal effort. But Bermuda is also the most aggressive grass you can plant — it will invade every bed, crack through every sidewalk, and colonize every bare spot within a single season if you let it.

Why Bermuda Dominates Dallas Lawns

Mowing: Short & Sharp

Bermuda's defining characteristic is its ability to be mowed extremely short without going dormant.

Watering: Deep & Infrequent

Bermuda rewards deep, infrequent watering with deeper roots and better drought tolerance.

SeasonFrequencyAmount/WeekNotes
May–June2×/week0.75–1 inchEstablishing growth
July–August2–3×/week1–1.5 inchesPeak demand; adjust for rain
September1–2×/week0.5–1 inchWinding down
October–November1×/week or skip0.25–0.5 inchDormancy transition
December–FebruaryEvery 2–3 weeksMaintenanceOnly if no rain

Bermuda's superpower: It will voluntarily go dormant (turn tan) during drought rather than die. This is a survival mechanism, not a sign of death. Resume deep watering and it greens up within 7–14 days.

Fertilization: Feed the Machine

Bermuda is a heavy feeder. Under-fertilized Bermuda thins out and invites weeds.

Managing Bermuda's Aggression

This is the #1 complaint from Bermuda homeowners. Solutions:

Common Problems

Chinch Bugs

Bermuda is the #1 host for chinch bugs, especially in full sun. Monitor monthly June–August using the float test. See our chinch bug guide.

Torchy Patch (Take-All Patch)

A fungal disease (Ophioscoralus cerealis) that appears as small circular brown spots in fall and spring. Less destructive than brown patch but persistent. Treat with a systemic fungicide (propiconazole) in September and March.

Winter Dormancy Confusion

Bermuda turns completely tan from November through March. This is normal. The crown and roots are alive. First green tips appear in mid-March when soil hits 60°F. Don't dig it up thinking it's dead.
